When duct cleaning is worth doing
It is not a job every house needs every year. It earns its money in specific situations:
- After a renovation, when drywall and sawdust have been pulled through the system
- Moving into an older house where the history of the ductwork is unknown
- Registers that blow visible dust when the system kicks on
- Evidence of mice or insects in the ducts
- Allergies that flare when the heat or air is running
What actually happens
The system is put under negative pressure and the runs are agitated and pulled clean back to the trunk, supply and return both. Wiping the register covers is not duct cleaning, and it is worth knowing the difference before paying anyone for it.

How often should ducts be cleaned?
For most homes it is an occasional job rather than a scheduled one. If nobody can remember it ever being done, that is usually the sign it is worth doing once, and then only again when something changes in the house.
